2iC-Care, the UK-based innovator in preventative Technology Enabled Care (TEC), set out to transform how care is delivered across homes, supported living and residential care settings. Their flagship solution, Andi, is a virtual carer. A smart, always-on hub that monitors wellbeing, detects risk early, and keeps people safe and independent.
To deliver the level of reliability, clarity and responsiveness required in life-critical situations, 2iC-Care needed exceptional two-way audio performance. After searching extensively for a technology partner able to meet stringent functional and regulatory demands, they selected XMOS.

Today, the Andi Hub, powered by the XMOS XVF voice processor, can be found in homes across the UK delivering proactive, preventative care that goes far beyond traditional analogue alarm systems.
The Challenge: Replacing a failing analogue infrastructure
Across the TEC sector, legacy analogue alarm systems, largely unchanged for 40+ years, are rapidly approaching obsolescence. With the UK’s analogue telephone network due to be switched off entirely by February 2027, a replacement was urgent.
But 2iC-Care saw an opportunity to go far beyond a like-for-like digital retrofit. They wanted to:
- Provide crystal-clear two-way voice communication, even in challenging acoustic environments.
- Move from reactive emergency response to continuous, preventative care.
- Create a modern, interoperable platform supporting RF 869 MHz, Bluetooth, WiFi, Zigbee, and LoRaWAN devices.
- Integrate with a wide range of environmental, behavioural and health sensors.
- Ensure connectivity across mobile (all networks), WiFi and Ethernet, automatically selecting the strongest signal.
Off-the-shelf hardware couldn’t meet these requirements. To achieve their ambitions, 2iC-Care decided to build the Andi Hub themselves and find a voice solution that could meet critical care standards.
The Solution: XMOS delivers ultra-reliable, high-clarity, far-field voice
During the technical exploration phase, 2iC-Care engineers were searching for a component capable of delivering their number one requirement: reliable, high-quality, two-way voice communication.
During evaluation, XMOS stood out for delivering the performance, configurability and reliability required for a life-critical device.
The Andi Hub is powered by the XMOS XVF voice processor, which delivers the clarity, range and reliability essential in life-critical care environments. The XVF provides:
- Exceptional audio clarity for emergency calls, delivering the reliability needed when every word matters.
- Far-field voice pickup and adaptive beamforming, allowing users to be heard clearly, even from across the room or when not facing the device.
- Advanced acoustic echo cancellation (AEC), ensuring clean communication even with loudspeaker output during two-way calls.
- Noise suppression for both stationary and non-stationary noise, improving intelligibility in real-world environments like kitchens, hallways or care homes.
- Dereverberation and double-talk robustness, enabling natural conversation without dropouts or clipping.
- Voice-activation support, enabling intuitive hands-free interaction in moments where pressing a button may be difficult.
- Automatic Gain Control (AGC), ensuring the user’s voice is captured at a consistent level regardless of room acoustics or speaking volume.
- Highly reliable silicon designed to meet the stringent requirements of the Technology Enabled Care (TEC) sector.
- Responsive XMOS engineering support, helping 2iC-Care through design, integration and optimisation.
XMOS voice technology is now embedded at the heart of the Andi Hub and deployed in real homes across the UK.
Implementation & Integration
The XMOS engineering team supported 2iC-Care through:
- Initial audio configuration and tuning
- Diagnostic work and board-level problem solving
- Ensuring the voice pathway delivered the clarity and reliability the application demands
The result is a robust, high-performance platform offering the audio quality required for critical care communication.

Outcome: From reactive to preventative care through voice
With XCORE powering its voice interface, Andi becomes far more than a digital alarm, it becomes the central intelligence of a comprehensive, preventative care ecosystem.
Digital Reactive Alarm (Next-Gen Telecare)
Andi provides a modern, plug-and-play alternative to legacy analogue alarms, offering reliable two-way voice communication during emergencies while reducing false alarms and the stress they create. Its roaming WiFi and Ethernet connectivity ensures consistent uptime, and full interoperability means it works seamlessly with devices from multiple manufacturers.
A future built on XCORE
2iC-Care is already designing XMOS into the next generation of the Andi platform.
