A moment for reflection

The dawn of a new year tends to be the time we all sit down and look to the future, spare a thought for the past and take a moment to ground ourselves in the present.

This year, with Brexit looming large, the year ahead may seem more uncertain than ever for anyone running a business. We talk to a broad selection of business leaders in our agenda piece this month about how they are planning for any disruption to trade at the end of March as Britain formally leaves the European Union.

It makes for quite telling reading to hear how businesses across different sectors are using stockpiling and other techniques to mitigate the risks posed by the transition period.

It’s certainly something that will have been playing on the minds of the leaders of all our Top 500 businesses in the region. We celebrate the 500 best-performing businesses once again in our flagship feature.

This month we are also publishing Insider’s annual South West Inward Investment Guide, in which we celebrate the industries fuelling the growth of the region’s economy, from aerospace and food and drink manufacturers, to digital technology and life sciences.

The guide comes with a foreword from the Secretary of State for International Trade, the Right Honourable Liam Fox MP, and another from Katherine Bennett, senior vice president for Airbus in the UK.

You will discover as you read on that the general theme, from Fox and Bennett, and everyone who features in the publication, is one of general optimism for the year ahead, in spite of Brexit uncertainties.

Nowhere is this more richly felt than in our special report on the Hinkley Point C power station project on the Somerset coast. Developments at Europe’s biggest construction site continue apace and act as a reminder that there is plenty to be excited about in the year ahead.
