Reference Design Delivers Simplified, Cost-Effective Solution with Immersive SRS WOW HD™ Audio for Digital Dock Makers Using Industries First Event-Driven Microcontroller
SANTA ANA, Calif., January 6, 2011 – SRS Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ: SRSL), officially recognized as one of America’s Greatest Brands and the industry leader in surround sound, audio and voice technologies and XMOS, developers of the industry’s first 32-bit event-driven microcontroller, today announced the availability of SRS WOW HD for XMOS iPod®/iPhone®/iPad™ speaker dock reference designs, which deliver a turnkey advanced digital dock design with superior audio performance, to CE manufacturers worldwide.
“The XMOS solution, based on a single core XS1-L1 microcontroller, delivers an exciting new SRS WOW HD implementation for digital iPod/iPhone/iPad accessories,” said Joanna Skrdlant, Senior Director of Global Platform Partnerships for SRS Labs. “XMOS, like SRS, is committed to quality audio, so their reference design eliminates the annoying wireless interference common in analog dock designs when a docked iPhone receives a call. Coupled with the option to enable SRS WOW HD for enhanced audio performance, we now have a cost-effective digital dock system with remarkable audio performance.”
The new XMOS-based reference design makes it easy for speaker dock makers to leap from sub-$100 analog speaker docks to sophisticated, SRS-enhanced digital audio docks packed with advanced features such as immunity to noise and interference, Apple™ authentication interface, USB 2.0 host connection to iPod and advanced options including S/PDIF digital input or output, Class D amplifier and SRS WOW HD audio enhancement processing. There is significant processing power available for additional software defined features and system customization.
The XMOS developed digital iPod dock reference design offers several additional advantages to manufacturers, including:
- End-to-end digital signal output for excellent noise immunity
- Designed to deliver a “pro-sumer” audio experience at consumer product price points
- Uniquely flexible and easy to customize with additional features using high level “C” language software in place of custom silicon or an FPGA
- Designed for low BOM cost and maximum flexibility
- Enables fast development of Apple certified products
“SRS has been a leader in audio enhancements for speaker docks so we are pleased to be leading the transition to digital iPod/iPhone/iPad docks with SRS Labs for Apple accessories,” said Joerg Bertholdt, VP of Marketing, XMOS. “The advantage of our solution is that it provides a high quality reference design for multimedia-rich digital audio docks while making it simple and cost-effective for the product designers.”
In terms of consumer-focused performance, the SRS WOW HD audio suite coupled with XMOS XCore processors can transform one’s personal multimedia experience into an immersive and thrilling event through:
- Dynamic location and restoration of audio details for enhanced depth, dimension
- Sculpted bass response for maximum “thump” from speakers
- Wider sound field and raised sound image for more natural audio reproduction
- High-definition control for greater clarity
- Real-time extraction and positioning of dialog to enhance clarity
XMOS digital dock reference designs using the XS1-L1 event-driven microcontroller are available now, and will be demonstrated using SRS WOW HD audio enhancements at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, January 6 – 9, 2011 in the Companies’ suites. XMOS will be located at the Venetian Hotel while SRS will be at the Encore Salon Towers.
